Beautiful Dinner #2

May 12th, 2008

On Thursday May 8th 2008, Beautiful Day Media hosted the 2nd official Beautiful Dinner. The concept of the dinners is to provide an ongoing platform & dialogue where creative people from all medias can exchange ideas and resources. Or as more aptly  described by our own “Super K” Kathryn Musilek “a forum for individuals interested and active in all forms of creative performance and expression, from rock n’ roll to visual art and dance. Basically, anyone who does anything creative, or has ever been interested in creative expression or the promotion thereof.”

This time around things were less ethereal and more real: Linus Corragio, who is currently having a show at the Gershwin Hotel until May 18, shared that the curators there are very open to showing new artists and he would gladly make the introduction for anyone interested. Linus even encouraged attending aerialist Lisa Natoli, to see about collaborating with a musician and visual artist for a performance piece in the foyer space. Graphic designer Steve Merola brought the idea of a limited edition hand crafted magazine to the group - - one which incorporates all art forms and is not only the product of artists of all medias but the result of - it would be created in an environment in which live music and visual art are simultaneously being created. Stylist Kenny Ho discussed his work which inspired Photographer Rachel Reis to recommend him for a video project in production. Kathryn Musilek suggested continuing the dialogue into the virtual realm with an invitation only email exchange, entitled “Bonne Idee” (pronounced sort of like “bunny day” and French for Good Idea) that would allow participants to freely post, from requesting or sharing resources or contacts that the group might be interested in or able to help with. The list is also open to the promotion of shows, openings and events. It was suggested that to invite someone to the list, they would email Kathryn, who would act as administrator, with an introductory email, explaining what interests them regarding our topics of conversation, and who invited them to the list. The intent of restricted access is to maintain the singleness of purpose of creative exchange, and it is promised that the list

absolutely not include “FORWARDS that involve the chain-letter mentality, cute pictures of cats, moving photos of dramatic weather photography, or scare-tactic forwards scandals and such.”

It was also suggested that the Beautiful Day website from herein feature a calendar of events, non exclusive to BDM clients so as to incorporate friends of and any ongoing we want to recommend.

Beyond the roundtable discussion, people mingled and talked amongst themselves and plenty of info was shared throughout. On the menu was lo mein from legendary Wo Hop in Chinatown.

In attendance this month; Ross Brodar (Visual artist), Alex Charpentier (Drummer for Aloke), Linus Corragio (Visual artist), Sonia De Francheschi, Francesca Galliani (Photographer/Visual artist), Kenny Ho (Fashion Stylist), Rosemary Hothschild (Actress/ Theater director), Steve Merola (Graphic Design), Lisa Natoli (Aerialist/Modern dancer), Herb Reichert (Visual artist), Raquel Reis (Photographer), Matt Shapiro (Canadian singer/songwriter),  as well as Elizabeth Freund (Owner of Beautiful Day Media and hostess of dinner), Cameron Honsa ( Junior publicist at Beautiful Day Media), Brandy Trottier (Junior Publicist at Beautiful Day Media), and Kathryn Musilek (Of Beautiful Day Media/ Manager of Frog Stand Records).

BDM - Dinner

April 9th, 2008

On March 9 Beautiful Day Media hosted their first Beautiful Dinner.  For our debut Beautiful Dinner we happened to attract primarily visual artists, though the idea is to include and provoke discussion and collaboration with creatives in all medias. On the menu was veggie Indian food from Panna II, on the collective mind was art and how attending artists can help one another, where they are at and how beautiful day might also help the artists we know and love. We want to create and provide an environment that stimulates and sustains dialogue and creative collaboration between artists and creative people of all medias: not just about the state of art in general but how they can collaborate creatively and practically (one artist who attended put out to the group she needed work space and another had it to give).

Among those in attendance: Linus Brant, Ross Brodar, Jennifer Ditacchio, Rosemary Hochschild, Brianna Olson, Michael Pope, Herb Reichert, Steve Westfall, Jennifer Weiss, Karolina Zarychta and Beautiful-Dayers’ Elizabeth Freund, Cameron Honsa, Brandy Trottier and our own BDM and Frog Stand Records’ label head Kathryn Musilik. Check out some of the links to the artists who attended:

It is not a new complaint in the art world that it gets too exclusive and in that way limits its own expression of the art and the artists who are current. We discussed how to circumvent that and what is actually the most important thing to an artist these days. The answers varied from : direct connection to collectors and buyers to shows where people can really see and participate in the art that these artists are creating. How to accomplish these things also varied. (one example discussed was artist Ross’ Brodars approach to being continually denied to show at the Outsiders Art Fair, so he circumventing the normal channels to exposure and made his own with his wonderful and now successful approach to parking outside the Outsiders show for 10 years straight - not unlike Monet so many years before - and grabbing the attention of a Wall Street Journal writer who put Ross on the front page. Another topic discussed is that “the most important part of any discussion about art is not about each individual piece but rather the context into and out of which it was created, the continuing dialogue each artist is having with himself and with society….”
