Vezna Gottwald

Vezna Gottwald paints to communicate in what she considers to be the primordial language. She was reared by a family of artists in New York City. Her formal studies began in high school under Aaron Kurzen - himself a former student of the Art Students' League in New York. Vezna's intention to communicate in a primordial language is immediately apparent in her work – though her paintings recall the discipline of her teachers and theirs, one can see the influence of Hans Hoffman, the playfulness of Cy Twombly, passionate brushwork like Joan Mitchell, and the palette of Monet and even Kandinsky – her work is entirely her own. Gottwald currently lives in California where she surfs the Pacific Ocean in the morning and paints in her studio in the afternoon.
